Distance, Light & Sky / Casting Nets

Classic and sublime songs seperate artists like Distance, Light & Sky from the mainstream. Their wonderful debut album consists of 10 amazing tracks analogue recorded in the Sono Studios in Prague with legendary producer Phill Brown (Talk Talk - „Spirit of Eden“). Songwriter Chris Eckman knows how to tie on to the best times of The Walkabouts but Distance, Light & Sky is not a solo- not either a side project it is truly a band of its own.

Alongside Chris Eckman you'll see the adorable female singer and songwriter Chantal Acda from the Netherlands/England. Chantal is well known for her work with the band the Isbells and recorded her last solo album „Let Your Hands Be My Guide“ with Nils Frahm and Peter Broderick of Efterklang („Exquisite. As soft as snow“ - MOJO 04/05, „Starry-eyed beauty“ - Uncut 08/10). Next to her and Chris there's percussionist and composer Eric Thielemans of the EARR Ensemble who's famous for his work with the legendary Sun Ra saxophonist Marshall Allen. You'll see that Distance, Light & Sky consists of 3 musicians coming from a different backround connected by a common musical vision.

Their debut „Casting Nets“ is a melancholy but optimistic album made of quiet and calm sounds, multifarious and nuanced, shaped by its composers and their various characters Eckman, Acda and Thielemans and the unique recording technique of producer Phill Brown. It's a true pleasure to listen to the duets of Chantal Acda with her female voice and Chris Eckman with his sonorous baritone voice. Most fascinating of all is the fact that these 3 totally different artists made the grade to bunch their varied influences into a homogenous and harmonic sound construct called „Casting Nets“.

Sustainable Sounds: Ubiquity x Cuipo

Ubiquity Records and Cuipo join forces to present “Sustainable Sounds”, a digital compilation with a purpose: “one square meter of rainforest” is preserved with every album purchase. With tracks culled from the deep vaults of the Ubiquity catalog featuring artists such as Radio Citizen, Shawn Lee, Monophonics, The Echocentrics, The Lions, NOMO, Ohmega Watts and many others. The compilation is a shared “musical vision” of a sustainable planet between the two brands and a collaborative effort to capture the laidback, California vibe set amongst the beats of the world, a nod to Ubiquity’s Golden State heritage and Cuipo’s roots in the rainforest.

SW/MM/NG – Feel Not Bad

The appropriately titled Feel Not Bad is the warm, jangling debut from Fayetteville, Arkansas indie pop quintet SW/MM/NG.
Difficult name aside, their music is decidedly trouble-free as they turn in a set of sparkling guitar pop tunes in the key of summer.
In both structure and melody, the band prefers simplicity,
letting the songs unfold at their own pace while using a palette of gentle psychedelia and heavy doses of reverb to color the backdrop.
Echoes of Galaxie 500’s pastoral indie rock resound throughout the album’s eight tracks, most of which clock in around a somewhat lengthy five minutes,
which is occasionally a bit too long and leaves attention to drift.
The songwriting and melodies are well-crafted and enjoyable, but their brand of shimmering, low-key pop is probably better served in bite-sized doses.
The carefree catchiness of “Some Dreams Come True” and “Younger” is undeniable,
and there is a very likeable charm to the whole affair even if, at times, it fails to fully captivate.
The album’s sequence is a bit curious, with the more upbeat and midtempo tracks up top and a cluster of slow burners holding down the back end, slowing the momentum.
Still, after so many songs in a similar vein, the pensive and moody “Oils” is a welcome change, boasting a very John Squire-inspired guitar tone.
The closing number “Good to Be” cruises at a comparable speed,
but ends the album on a warm, uplifting note as it concludes in a lovely swirl of orchestrated flutes, organ, and guitars.
It’s a promising debut from a band with a lot of style, though some further attention to diversity and brevity could improve their future chances.
