Orbital / Radiccio

Orbital have shared a rework of their 1989 single 'Deeper' featuring Oscar-winning actor Tilda Swinton.

Debuting on Friday (April 4), the single has been made available via a re-release of their 1992 four-tracker 'Radiccio' — and features Swinton delivering meditative instruction over the track's dithering, acid-laced synths.

I first heard, what only many years later I finally came to know as Rebetiko music, in the Greek cafes and tavernas of suburban Melbourne in the late seventies.These places were predominantly the local social hubs of Greek migrants who had been coming in successive waves to Australia since the late 19th century and during the day were often populated by groups of old men playing backgammon and sipping ouzo whilst listening to laika and rebetiko music. 

As it happens I too had been a migrant to these southern climes from England some years earlier and as good fortune would have it our means of conveyance for the six week long voyage was an old Greek ship called the ‘Ellinis’. It was on board this ship that my own personal musical odyssey began when I first learnt to play the guitar. 

Over the years my love for ‘all things Greek’ has run somewhat unabated and especially with regard to Rebetiko music. I have amassed a considerable collection of recorded music, traditional instruments and memorabilia over the years that would eventually give me the inspiration and valued education required to be able to record some of these wonderful songs. 

The fact that there has been virtually no recorded versions of Rebetiko songs sung in English was also a great surprise to me and was ultimately the prime motivator for me to share these songs with an English speaking audience as well as pique the curiosity of the die hard traditionalist.

Reggae has long been an underground favorite in Japan, but not only are there a significant amount of fans there listening to reggae, there has been some quality reggae music coming out of Japan since the early '80s. Dub seems to be the sound of choice of the best-known of these Japanese performers, with acts like Dry & Heavy, Pecker's 21st Century Dub, and Mute Beat honing a unique and engaging style. Like the 21st Century Dub album, Mute Beat in Dub is a distinct, seamless mix of dub, roots reggae, and jazz. Led by trumpeter Kazufumi "Echo" Kodama, the music is horn-dominated, often incorporating both trumpet and trombone intertwining in a harmonic ballet, as on "Landscape." While you might think that strictly horn-led dub may have its limitations, it never gets stale, from "Metro" to the distant, vintage sound of "Still Echo" to vocal track "Mixed Up" to the Spaghetti Western-style music of "Fiolina". There's certainly a sense of avant-garde experimentalism on Mute Beat in Dub (again, like 21st Century Dub), as evidenced by the sounds-like-it-was-recorded-in-a-well percussion-fest "Dee Jay Style." If you're a dub fan, you definitely owe it to yourself to know this album. Crystal Light!

Ρώσοι, από St. Petersburg.  Δε ξέρω και πολλά για τη μπάντα αλλά αφού ρωτάς να σου πω ότι παίζουν (έπαιζαν;) κάτι ανάμεσα σε Electronica, Rock, Funk και Belearic Disco.  

Favorite track το κορυφαίο Megalopolis. Ταξιδιάρικο όσο δε πάει.

Sans la musique, la vie serait une erreur

Είχες ποτέ μια από αυτές τις νύχτες που νιώθεις ότι όλα σου φταίνε, τίποτα δε σου πάει καλά και αρχίζεις να υποψιάζεσαι ότι μάλλον φταις λιγάκι και εσύ;

Εκεί που καθόμουν λοιπόν με το τσιγάρο και το ποτό μου να σκοτώνω το χρόνο μου βλέποντας βιντεάκια στο youtube  πέφτω πάνω στο live του D.D Dumbo από το Pitchfork. 

Βλέποντας τον άρχισα να θαυμάζω το ταλέντο του αλλά και να ξενερώνω ακόμα πιο πολύ σκεφτόμενος πόσα ωραία πράγματα γίνονται στην πόλη και εγώ τα έχω χάσει. Αυτά βέβαια μέχρι να δω τη φάτσα μου να κουνίεται στο ρυθμό λίγο πριν το τέλος του κομματιού. Είχα ξεχάσει ότι ήμουν και εγώ εκεί από κάτω (είχα πάει κυρίως για τους Future Islands τότε).

Μαζί με το τσιγάρο έσβησα και την αυτολύπηση από τα μούτρα μου και σκέφτηκα "Sans la musique, la vie serait une erreur".
